Sahih al-Bukhari 6641 (Book 83, Hadith 20) #6387
Taking What Is Just And Reasonable

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Hind bint 'Utba bin Rabi'a, who was previously an enemy of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his family. She asked the Prophet if it was sinful for her to feed her children from her husband's property, to which he replied that it was not sinful as long as she took only what is just and reasonable.

Narrated 'Aisha: Hind bint 'Utba bin Rabi'a said, "O Allah 's Apostle! (Before I embraced Islam), there was no family on the surface of the earth, I wish to have degraded more than I did your family. But today there is no family whom I wish to have honored more than I did yours". Allah's Messenger said, "I thought similarly, by Him in Whose Hand Muhammad's soul is!" Hind said, "O Allah's Messenger ! (My husband) Abu Sufyan is a miser. Is it sinful of me to feed my children from his property?" The Prophet said, "No, unless you take it for your needs what is just and reasonable".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about a woman named Hind bint 'Utba bin Rabi'a who used to be an enemy of the Prophet Muhammad's family before she embraced Islam. She asked him if it would be sinful for her to feed her children from her husband's property, Abu Sufyan being a miser. The Prophet answered that it would not be sinful as long as she took only what is just and reasonable. This hadith teaches us that we should take care of our families even if our spouses are not generous with their wealth, but we should also make sure that we do not take more than what is necessary or justifiable in order to avoid sinning against Allah SWT. We must also remember that Allah SWT will always provide for us no matter how difficult our circumstances may seem at times.
