Sahih al-Bukhari 6618 (Book 82, Hadith 24) #6365
Exceeding Limits

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ warned Ibn Saiyad not to exceed his limits and 'Umar wanted to kill him, but the Prophet ﷺ advised against it.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet said to Ibn Saiyad, "I have kept for you a secret". Ibn Saiyad said, "Ad-Dukh (smoke)". The Prophet said, "Keep quiet, for you cannot go beyond your limits (or you cannot exceed what has been foreordained for you)". On that, 'Umar said (to the Prophet ), "Allow me to chop off his neck!" The Prophet said, "Leave him, for if he is he (ie, Ad-Dajjal), then you will not be able to overcome him, and if he is not, then you gain no good by killing him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for others, Think before acting

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of not exceeding one's limits. The Prophet (ﷺ) was talking to Ibn Saiyad and warned him not to go beyond what has been foreordained for him. 'Umar wanted to kill Ibn Saiyad, but the Prophet (ﷺ) advised against it, saying that if he was Ad-Dajjal then they would not be able to overcome him and if he wasn't then there would be no benefit in killing him. This hadith teaches us that we should never exceed our limits or try anything beyond our capabilities as this could lead us into danger or difficulty. We should also think twice before taking any action as it may have consequences we are unable to foresee or control.
