Sahih al-Bukhari 655, 656 (Book 10, Hadith 50) #630
Rewarded Steps Towards Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged the people of Bani Salima to take steps towards the mosque for prayer, as they will be rewarded for each step taken.

Narrated Humaid: Anas said, "The Prophet said, 'O Bani Salima! Don't you think that for every step of yours (that you take towards the mosque) there is a reward (while coming for prayer)?" Mujahid said: "Regarding Allah's Statement: "We record that which they have sent before (them), and their traces" (36:12)'.Their traces' means 'their steps'. " And Anas said that the people of Bani Salima wanted to shift to a place near the Prophet but Allah's Messenger disliked the idea of leaving their houses uninhabited and said, "Don't you think that you will get the reward for your footprints". Mujahid said, "Their foot prints mean their foot steps and their going on foot".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take steps towards a mosque with good intentions and sincerity in order to seek reward from Allah

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how we can gain rewards from Allah by taking steps towards the mosque for prayer. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was encouraging the people of Bani Salima to take steps towards the mosque for prayer as they will be rewarded for each step taken. Mujahid said that Allah's statement in Surah Ya-Sin "We record that which they have sent before (them), and their traces" (36:12) means their footsteps. Anas said that when people wanted to move closer to the Prophet ﷺ he discouraged them from leaving their houses uninhabited and instead encouraged them to get rewards by taking steps towards the mosque. This hadith teaches us that even small acts of worship such as walking or travelling can bring us rewards if done with good intentions and sincerity.
