Sahih al-Bukhari 6483 (Book 81, Hadith 72) #6232
Protecting People from Falling into the Fire

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how the Prophet (PBUH) is trying to protect people from falling into the Fire, but they insist on doing so.

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Messenger saying, "My example and the example of the people is that of a man who made a fire, and when it lighted what was around it, Moths and other insects started falling into the fire. The man tried (his best) to prevent them, (from falling in the fire) but they overpowered him and rushed into the fire. The Prophet added: Now, similarly, I take hold of the knots at your waist (belts) to prevent you from falling into the Fire, but you insist on falling into it".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was trying to protect people from falling into the fire of Hell. He likened himself to a man who made a fire and when it lit up what was around it, moths and other insects started falling into it. The man tried his best to prevent them but they overpowered him and rushed in anyway. Similarly, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said he takes hold of the knots at people's waists in order to prevent them from falling into Hellfire but they insist on doing so anyway. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions as we are ultimately responsible for our own salvation or damnation. We should strive for righteousness and stay away from sinning as much as possible in order to ensure that we do not fall prey to our own desires and end up in Hellfire despite all efforts by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or anyone else for that matter.
