Sahih al-Bukhari 6417 (Book 81, Hadith 6) #6166
Life Encircled by Troubles and Calamities

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ drew a picture to illustrate how life is surrounded by troubles and calamities, but hope lies outside of it.

Narrated 'Abdullah: The Prophet drew a square and then drew a line in the middle of it and let it extend outside the square and then drew several small lines attached to that central line, and said, "This is the human being, and this, (the square) in his lease of life, encircles him from all sides (or has encircled him), and this (line), which is outside (the square), is his hope, and these small lines are the calamities and troubles (which may befall him), and if one misses him, an-other will snap (ie overtake) him, and if the other misses him, a third will snap (ie overtake) him".

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad drew a picture to illustrate the human experience of life. He drew a square to represent the limits of our lives on earth. Inside this square were several small lines that represented the troubles and calamities that we face in our lives. These could be anything from sickness or financial hardship to family issues or heartbreak. Outside the square was one long line representing hope - something that can help us get through all these difficulties no matter how hard they may seem at times. This hadith teaches us that although life can be difficult at times, there is always hope for better days ahead if we keep faith in Allah and trust in His plan for us.
