Sahih al-Bukhari 6193 (Book 78, Hadith 217) #5946
Refusing to Change One's Name

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ asked Hazn what his name was and when he said it was Hazn, the Prophet ﷺ suggested that he change it to Sahl. He refused and this has been passed down in his family as a trait of roughness.

Narrated Sa'id bin Al-Musaiyab: That when his grandfather, Hazn visited the Prophet the Prophet said (to him), "What is your name?" He said, "My name is Hazn". The Prophet said, " But you are Sahl". He said, "I will not change my name with which my father named me". Ibn Al-Musaiyab added: So we have had roughness (in character) ever since.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your parent’s decisions even if you don’t agree with them . Be proud of your own name given by your parents .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of keeping one's name given by their parents. When Hazn visited the Prophet Muhammad, he asked him what his name was and when Hazn told him, the Prophet suggested that he change it to Sahl instead. However, Hazn refused and kept his original name given by his father. This refusal has been passed down in his family as a trait of roughness ever since then. It teaches us that we should respect our parents' decisions even if we don't agree with them because they are usually made out of love for us and for our best interests in mind. We should also be proud of our names given by our parents because they are part of who we are as individuals and represent where we come from.
