Sahih al-Bukhari 6186 (Book 78, Hadith 210) #5939
Naming Children According to Islamic Values

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised a man to name his son 'Abdur-Rahman' instead of Al-Qasim, as the latter was not respected by the people.

Narrated Jabir: A boy was born for a man among us, and the man named him Al-Qasim. We said to him, "We will not call you Abu-l-Qasim, nor will we respect you for that". The Prophet was informed about that, and he said, "Name your son 'Abdur-Rahman".

QUICK LESSONS:
Choose meaningful Islamic Names with good connotations in Islam for your children

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about naming children according to Islamic values. It is narrated by Jabir that a man among them had a son and he named him Al-Qasim. However, the people around him did not respect this name and so they refused to call him Abu-l-Qasim or show any respect for it. When the Prophet was informed about this, he advised them to name their son 'Abdur-Rahman'. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful when choosing names for our children as some names may not be respected in society and can lead to disrespect towards our children. We should choose names which are meaningful and have good connotations in Islam such as 'Abdur Rahman', which means servant of Allah, or other meaningful Islamic names like Muhammad or Ali etc.
