Sahih al-Bukhari 6069 (Book 78, Hadith 99) #5828
The Forgiveness of Private Sins

SUMMARY: Sins committed in private will be forgiven, but sins committed openly and disclosed to others will not be forgiven.

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Messenger saying".All the sins of my followers will be forgiven except those of the Mujahirin (those who commit a sin openly or disclose their sins to the people). An example of such disclosure is that a person commits a sin at night and though Allah screens it from the public, then he comes in the morning, and says, 'O so-and-so, I did such-and-such (evil) deed yesterday,' though he spent his night screened by his Lord (none knowing about his sin) and in the morning he removes Allah's screen from himself".

QUICK LESSONS:
Repent from your sins privately; do not disclose your wrongdoings publicly; seek forgiveness from Allah; make amends with those you have wronged; show humility before God by being ashamed of your actions; practice discretion when discussing matters related to religion or morality.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the forgiveness of sins. It teaches us that if we commit a sin in private, Allah will forgive us for it. However, if we commit a sin and then tell other people about it, Allah will not forgive us for this sin. This is because when we tell other people about our sins, it shows that we are not ashamed or sorry for what we have done and so Allah does not forgive us for this kind of behavior. We should always remember that even though Allah may forgive our private sins, He still expects us to repent and make amends for them in order to receive His mercy and forgiveness.
