Sahih al-Bukhari 604 (Book 10, Hadith 2) #582
Introduction of Adhan for Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the introduction of Adhan for prayer by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and how it was suggested by Umar.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: When the Muslims arrived at Medina, they used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time for it. During those days, the practice of Adhan for the prayers had not been introduced yet. Once they discussed this problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people suggested the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a trumpet like the horn used by the Jews, but 'Umar was the first to suggest that a man should call (the people) for the prayer; so Allah's Messenger ordered Bilal to get up and pronounce the Adhan for prayers.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic traditions such as calling out 'Adhan' before every prayer.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the introduction of a call to prayer known as ‘Adhan’ in Islam. When the Muslims arrived at Medina they used to assemble for prayer but did not know when it was time to pray. Some people suggested using bells like Christians or trumpets like Jews but Umar suggested that a man should call out for prayers and Allah's Messenger ordered Bilal to do so. This is how the practice of calling out ‘Adhan’ before every prayer started in Islam and has been followed ever since then. It is an important part of Islamic worship as it reminds us that we should be ready to offer our prayers at all times and also helps us keep track of time throughout the day.
