Exaggeration in Praise is Unacceptable

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ warned against exaggerating in praise of someone.

Narrated Abu Musa: The Prophet heard a man praising another man and he was exaggerating in his praise. The Prophet said (to him)".You have destroyed (or cut) the back of the man".
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَبَّاحٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّاءَ، حَدَّثَنَا بُرَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، قَالَ سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ رَجُلاً يُثْنِي عَلَى رَجُلٍ وَيُطْرِيهِ فِي الْمِدْحَةِ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ أَهْلَكْتُمْ ـ أَوْ قَطَعْتُمْ ـ ظَهْرَ الرَّجُلِ

This hadith, narrated by Abu Musa, warns against the act of exaggerating in praise of someone. In response to this, the Prophet (ﷺ) said "You have destroyed/cut the back of the man". This statement implies that one should not go too far with their compliments as it can be damaging to both parties involved.
