Sahih al-Bukhari 6055 (Book 78, Hadith 85) #5814
Punishment for Small Sins

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ heard two people being tortured in their graves and found out that they were being punished for small sins. He then placed a piece of a green palm tree leaf on each grave, hoping that their punishment would be lessened.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Once the Prophet went through the grave-yards of Medina and heard the voices of two humans who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet said, "They are being punished, but they are not being punished because of a major sin, yet their sins are great. One of them used not to save himself from (being soiled with) the urine, and the other used to go about with calumnies (Namima)". Then the Prophet asked for a green palm tree leaf and split it into two pieces and placed one piece on each grave, saying, "I hope that their punishment may be abated as long as these pieces of the leaf are not dried".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of our actions even if we think they are minor , Strive to avoid spreading rumors or gossiping about others .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's visit to the graveyard of Medina. He heard two people being tortured in their graves and asked what they had done wrong. He was told that they were not being punished for major sins, but rather small ones; one person did not take care to avoid getting urine on himself, while the other spread rumors or calumnies about others. The Prophet then took a green palm tree leaf and split it into two pieces, placing one piece on each grave with the hope that this would lessen their punishment as long as the leaves remained fresh. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our actions even if we think they are minor because Allah will still hold us accountable for them in this life and beyond. We should also strive to avoid spreading rumors or gossiping about others as it can have serious consequences both here and hereafter.
