Sahih al-Bukhari 6022 (Book 78, Hadith 53) #5782
The Obligation of Charity

SUMMARY: Every Muslim is obligated to give charity, and if they are unable to do so, they should help the oppressed in any way possible. If that is not possible, then they should at least refrain from doing evil.

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari: The Prophet said, "On every Muslim there is enjoined (a compulsory) Sadaqa (alms)". They (the people) said, "If one has nothing?' He said, "He should work with his hands so that he may benefit himself and give in charity". They said, "If he cannot work or does not work?" He said, "Then he should help the oppressed unhappy person (by word or action or both)". They said, "If he does not do it?" He said, "Then he should enjoin what is good (or said what is reasonable)'. They said, "If he does not do that''' He said, "Then he should refrain from doing evil, for that will be considered for Him as a Sadaqa (charity) ".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity if you have the means; Help those who are oppressed; Enjoin what is good; Do good deeds; Be generous and kind towards others .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the obligation of charity for every Muslim. It teaches us that we must give charity if we have the means to do so. However, if we are unable to give charity due to financial constraints or other reasons, then we should still help those who are oppressed in any way possible - whether it be through words or actions. If even this is not possible for us, then at least we should refrain from doing evil as this will be considered a form of charity too. This hadith reminds us that even when our resources are limited, there are still ways in which we can contribute positively towards society and benefit others around us.
