Sahih al-Bukhari 5810 (Book 77, Hadith 28) #5572
The Generosity of the Prophet (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) was gifted a Burda by a lady and he accepted it. He then gave it away to someone who asked for it, and the man said he wanted to use it as his shroud when he died. Later on, that is exactly what happened.

Narrated Abu Hazim: Shahl bin Sa'd said, "A lady came with a Burda. Sahl then asked (the people), "Do you know what Burda is?" Somebody said, "Yes. it is a Shamla with a woven border". Sahl added, "The lady said, 'O Allah's Messenger ! I have knitted this (Burda) with my own hands for you to wear it". Allah's Messenger took it and he was in need of it. Allah's Messenger came out to us and he was wearing it as an Izar. A man from the people felt it and said, 'O Allah's Messenger ! Give it to me to wear'. The Prophet s said, 'Yes'. Then he sat there for some time (and when he went to his house), he folded it and sent it to him. The people said to that man, 'You have not done a right thing. You asked him for it, though you know that he does not put down anybody's request'. The man said, 'By Allah! I have only asked him so that it may be my shroud when I die". Sahl added, "Late it was his shroud".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous towards others even if you are in need yourself.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the generosity of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It tells us how a woman gifted him with a Burda, which is an item of clothing with woven borders, and how he accepted her gift even though he was in need of it himself. He then gave away this gift to someone who asked for it, despite knowing that people usually don't accept requests from others. This man said that he wanted to use this Burda as his shroud when he dies - and later on, this is exactly what happened! This hadith teaches us about being generous towards others even if we are in need ourselves; we should not be selfish but instead give away whatever we can spare so that others may benefit from our kindness too!
