Sahih al-Bukhari 5656 (Book 75, Hadith 16) #5430
Illness as Expiation

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ visited a sick bedouin and told him that his illness could be an expiation for his sins, to which the bedouin disagreed.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet went to visit a sick bedouin. Whenever the Prophet went to a patient, he used to say to him, "Don't worry, if Allah will, it will be expiation (for your sins):" The bedouin said, "You say expiation? No, it is but a fever that is boiling or harassing an old man and will lead him to his grave without his will". The Prophet said, "Then, yes, it is so".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion towards those who are ill; understand our lives are in God's hands; accept illness as an expiation from God; show kindness through words of comfort during times of hardship or difficulty .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's visit to a sick bedouin. When he saw the man was ill, he said that it could be an expiation for his sins. The bedouin disagreed with this idea and said that it was just a fever that would lead him to his grave without his will. The Prophet then agreed with him and accepted what he said. This hadith teaches us that even though illness can be seen as an expiation from Allah, we should not take it lightly or think of it as something insignificant because ultimately, our lives are in His hands and He decides when we will leave this world. We should also remember to show compassion towards those who are ill by visiting them and offering words of comfort like the Prophet did in this hadith.
