Sahih al-Bukhari 5648 (Book 75, Hadith 8) #5422
Rewards for Affliction

SUMMARY: Allah rewards those who are afflicted with harm, even if it is as small as a thorn prick.

Narrated 'Abdullah: I visited Allah's Messenger while he was suffering from a high fever. I said, "O Allah's Messenger ! You have a high fever". He said, "Yes, I have as much fever as two men of you". I said, "Is it because you will have a double reward?" He said, "Yes, it is so. No Muslim is afflicted with any harm, even if it were the prick of a thorn, but that Allah expiates his sins because of that, as a tree sheds its leaves".

QUICK LESSONS:
Endure hardships and difficulties with patience; Seek forgiveness from Allah; Receive rewards from Allah for enduring afflictions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when a Muslim is afflicted with any kind of harm, even if it is something small like the prick of a thorn, Allah will expiate their sins because of that. This means that Allah will forgive them for their sins and reward them for enduring the affliction. The Prophet Muhammad compared this to how a tree sheds its leaves in order to make new ones grow in its place. This teaches us that although we may experience hardships and difficulties in life, these can be seen as opportunities to be rewarded by Allah and have our sins forgiven.
