Drinking Water While Standing

SUMMARY: Drinking water while standing is permissible and was practiced by the Prophet.

Narrated An-Nazzal: Ali came to the gate of the courtyard (of the Mosque) and drank (water) while he was standing and said, "Some people dislike to drink while standing, but I saw the Prophet doing (drinking water) as you have seen me doing now".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مِسْعَرٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ، عَنِ النَّزَّالِ، قَالَ أَتَى عَلِيٌّ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَلَى باب الرَّحَبَةِ، فَشَرِبَ قَائِمًا فَقَالَ إِنَّ نَاسًا يَكْرَهُ أَحَدُهُمْ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ وَهْوَ قَائِمٌ، وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ فَعَلَ كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us that drinking water while standing is permissible and was practiced by the Prophet. Ali came to the gate of the courtyard of the Mosque and drank water while he was standing. He then said that some people dislike to drink while standing but he saw the Prophet doing it as well. This hadith teaches us that we should not be ashamed or embarrassed to do something if it is permissible in Islam even if others may not like it or think differently about it. We should follow what has been taught by our beloved Prophet and practice his teachings in our daily lives.
