Sahih al-Bukhari 5503 (Book 72, Hadith 29) #5279
Humane Slaughtering of Animals

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught the people how to slaughter animals in a humane way and that they should mention Allah's name when doing so.

Narrated Rafi' bin Khadij: that he said, "O Allah's Messenger ! We have no knife". The Prophet said, "if the killing tool causes blood to gush out, and if Allah's Name is mentioned, eat (of the slaughtered animal). But do not slaughter with a nail or a tooth, for the nail is the knife of Ethiopians and a tooth is a bone". Suddenly a camel ran away and it was stopped (with an arrow). The Prophet then said, "Of these camels there are some which are as wild as wild beasts; so if one of them runs away from you and you cannot catch it, treat it in this manner (ie shoot it with an arrow).

QUICK LESSONS:
Mention Allah's Name before slaughtering an animal

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is teaching us about the proper way to slaughter animals. He explains that if you are going to use a knife or any other tool to kill an animal, you must mention Allah's name before doing so. This is because it is important for us to remember that we are taking life and we must do it in a respectful manner. Additionally, he teaches us not to use nails or teeth as tools for killing animals because these can be painful and cruel methods of killing them. Lastly, he also teaches us what to do if an animal runs away from us - shoot it with an arrow instead of chasing after it as this will cause less stress on the animal. All in all, this hadith reminds us of our responsibility towards animals and how we should treat them with respect even when taking their lives for food or other purposes.
