Sahih al-Bukhari 5476 (Book 72, Hadith 2) #5252
Rules of Hunting and Eating Game

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the rules of hunting and eating game.

Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim: I asked Allah's Messenger about the Mi'rad. He said, "If you hit the game with its sharp edge, eat it, but if the Mi'rad hits the game with its shaft with a hit by its broad side do not eat it, for it has been beaten to death with a piece of wood. (ie unlawful)". I asked, "If I let loose my trained hound after a game?" He said, "If you let loose your trained hound after game, and mention the name of Allah, then you can eat". I said, "If the hound eats of the game?" He said "Then you should not eat of it, for the hound has hunted the game for itself and not for you". I said, "Some times I send my hound and then I find some other hound with it?" He said "Don't eat the game, as you have mentioned the Name of Allah on your dog only and not on the other".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow laws set by God when hunting or consuming food from animals or other sources in nature .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the rules of hunting and eating game. It was narrated by 'Adi bin Hatim, who asked Allah's Messenger about the Mi'rad, which is a type of weapon used for hunting. The Prophet said that if you hit the game with its sharp edge, then you can eat it, but if it is hit with a shaft with a broad side then it should not be eaten as it has been beaten to death with a piece of wood. He also said that if one lets loose their trained hound after game and mentions the name of Allah before doing so, then they can eat from what their hound catches. However, if another hound joins in on the hunt then one should not eat from what was caught as they only mentioned Allah's name on their own dog. This hadith teaches us to be mindful when we are hunting or consuming any type of food that comes from animals or other sources in nature; we must make sure that we are following all laws set by God in order to remain within His boundaries.
