Sahih al-Bukhari 52 (Book 2, Hadith 45) #52
Staying Away from Doubtful Things

SUMMARY: One should stay away from doubtful and suspicious things in order to protect their religion and honor.

Narrated An-Nu'man bin Bashir: I heard Allah's Messenger saying, 'Both legal and illegal things are evident but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and most of the people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these suspicious things saves his religion and his honor. And whoever indulges in these suspicious things is like a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it. (O people!) Beware! Every king has a Hima and the Hima of Allah on the earth is His illegal (forbidden) things. Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of staying away from doubtful and suspicious things in order to protect one's religion and honor. Allah's Messenger has warned us that indulging in such activities is like a shepherd who grazes his animals near someone else's private pasture without permission. He could be liable to get into it at any moment. The Prophet also mentioned that there is a piece of flesh in the body which if it becomes good then the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt then the whole body gets spoilt - this piece of flesh is the heart. Therefore, we must take care of our hearts by avoiding all kinds of doubtful activities so that our entire being can remain pure and righteous.
