Marriage in Exchange for Memorizing Qur'an

SUMMARY: A woman came to the Prophet (ﷺ) seeking marriage, and the man who wanted to marry her had nothing to offer as a Mahr except his Izar. The Prophet (ﷺ) suggested that he memorize some of the Qur'an instead, and so they were married for what he knew of it.

Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd: A woman came to Allah's Messenger and said, "I present myself (to you) (for marriage). She stayed for a long while, then a man said, "If you are not in need of her then marry her to me". The Prophet said, "Have you got anything m order to pay her Mahr?" He said, "I have nothing with me except my Izar (waist sheet)". The Prophet said, "If you give her your Izar, you will have no Izar to wear, (so go) and search for something. He said, "I could not find anything". The Prophet said, "Try (to find something), even if it were an iron ring But he was not able to find (even that) The Prophet said (to him)".Do you memorize something of the Qur'an?" "Yes'. he said, "such Sura and such Sura," naming those surahs The Prophet said, "We have married her to you for what you know of the Qur'an (by heart).

QUICK LESSONS:
Learn Quran ; Offer intangible items such as knowledge when necessary ; Get married according to Islamic laws .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman who came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ seeking marriage. The man she was interested in marrying did not have anything with him that could be used as a mahr, which is an obligatory payment given by the groom or his family to the bride at the time of marriage. In this case, all he had was his Izar - a waist sheet - but this was not enough for mahr. The Prophet ﷺ then suggested that instead of giving something material, he should give something intangible - knowledge from Allah's book - and so they were married based on what he knew from memorizing parts of Quran. This teaches us that knowledge is valuable and can be used in place of material goods when necessary; it also shows us how important it is to learn Quran and understand its teachings. Additionally, this hadith emphasizes how important marriage is in Islam; even if someone does not have much money or possessions, they can still get married if they are able to provide something else valuable such as knowledge from Allah's book.
