Sahih al-Bukhari 5081 (Book 67, Hadith 19) #4865
Marriage Permissibility Despite Brotherhood

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) asked Abu Bakr for his daughter Aisha's hand in marriage, and Abu Bakr initially refused because he was the Prophet's brother. The Prophet (ﷺ) then explained that although they were brothers in religion and the book of Allah, it was permissible for him to marry Aisha.

Narrated 'Urwa: The Prophet asked Abu Bakr for 'Aisha's hand in marriage. Abu Bakr said "But I am your brother". The Prophet said, "You are my brother in Allah's religion and His Book, but she (Aisha) is lawful for me to marry".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the permissibility of marriage despite being related by brotherhood in religion and Allah’s book. It is narrated by Urwa ibn al-Zubayr that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked Abu Bakr for his daughter Aisha’s hand in marriage, Abu Bakr initially refused because he was the Prophet’s brother. However, the Prophet ﷺ explained to him that although they were brothers in religion and Allah’s book, it was still permissible for him to marry her according to Islamic law. This hadith teaches us that even though we may be related through our faith or through a holy book such as Quran, it does not mean we cannot get married if both parties are willing and agree upon it according to Islamic law.
