Sahih al-Bukhari 5058 (Book 66, Hadith 83) #4842
Falsely Religious People

SUMMARY: People may appear who seem to be more religious than others, but they will not act on the teachings of the Quran and will eventually leave Islam.

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: I heard Allah's Messenger saying, "There will appear some people among you whose prayer will make you look down upon yours, and whose fasting will make you look down upon yours, but they will recite the Qur'an which will not exceed their throats (they will not act on it) and they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out through the game whereupon the archer would examine the arrowhead but see nothing, and look at the unfeathered arrow but see nothing, and look at the arrow feathers but see nothing, and finally he suspects to find something in the lower part of the arrow".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to practice what you preach and live your life according to Islamic teachings so your faith remains strong even when tested by Allah SWT .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about people who may appear to be very religious and pious but in reality are not. They may pray more than others or fast more than others but they do not actually act upon what is taught in the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ compared them to an arrow that has been shot by an archer. The archer looks at the arrowhead and feathers but finds nothing wrong with it; however when he looks at the lower part of the arrow he finds something wrong with it. In this case, these people look like they are following Islam correctly on the outside; however when you look closer you can see that their actions do not match their words and beliefs. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to practice what we preach and live our lives according to Islamic teachings so that our faith remains strong even when tested by Allah SWT.
