Sahih al-Bukhari 5020 (Book 66, Hadith 42) #4801
The Benefits of Reciting the Qur'an

SUMMARY: Believers who recite the Quran are like citrons, which have a good taste and smell. Those who do not recite the Quran are like dates, which have a good taste but no smell. Dissolute wicked people who recite the Quran are like Raihana, which smells good but tastes bitter. Dissolute wicked people who do not recite the Quran are like Colocynth, which has no smell and tastes bitter.

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari: The Prophet said, "The example of him (a believer) who recites the Qur'an is like that of a citron which tastes good and smells good. And he (a believer) who does not recite the Qur'an is like a date which is good in taste but has no smell. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who recites the Qur'an is like the Raihana (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who does not recite the Qur'an is like the Colocynth which tastes bitter and has no smell.

QUICK LESSONS:
Read & Understand The Holy Book Of Allah .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how important it is to read and understand the Qur’an. It compares believers who read and understand it to citrons that both taste good and smell nice; while those that don't read or understand it to dates that only have a pleasant taste but no scent. It also compares dissolute wicked people who read it to Raihana, which smells nice but tastes bad; while those that don't read or understand it to Colocynth, which has neither a pleasant scent nor taste. This hadith teaches us that reading and understanding the Qur’an is essential for believers as well as for dissolute wicked people in order for them to benefit from its teachings in both this life and in their afterlife.
