Sahih al-Bukhari 4987 (Book 66, Hadith 9) #4768
Compiling Perfect Copies of The Quran

SUMMARY: Uthman sent a message to Hafsa to send the manuscripts of the Qur'an so that they could compile perfect copies and return them. He then ordered Zaid bin Thabit, 'Abdullah bin AzZubair, Sa'id bin Al-As and 'AbdurRahman bin Harith bin Hisham to rewrite the manuscripts in perfect copies. He then sent one copy of what they had copied to every Muslim province and ordered all other Qur'anic materials be burnt.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman came to 'Uthman at the time when the people of Sham and the people of Iraq were Waging war to conquer Arminya and Azerbaijan. Hudhaifa was afraid of their (the people of Sham and Iraq) differences in the recitation of the Qur'an, so he said to 'Uthman, "O chief of the Believers! Save this nation before they differ about the Book (Qur'an) as Jews and the Christians did before". So 'Uthman sent a message to Hafsa saying, "Send us the manuscripts of the Qur'an so that we may compile the Qur'anic materials in perfect copies and return the manuscripts to you". Hafsa sent it to 'Uthman'.Uthman then ordered Zaid bin Thabit, 'Abdullah bin AzZubair, Sa'id bin Al-As and 'AbdurRahman bin Harith bin Hisham to rewrite the manuscripts in perfect copies'.Uthman said to the three Quraishi men, "In case you disagree with Zaid bin Thabit on any point in the Qur'an, then write it in the dialect of Quraish, the Qur'an was revealed in their tongue". They did so, and when they had written many copies, 'Uthman returned the original manuscripts to Hafsa'.Uthman sent to every Muslim province one copy of what they had copied, and ordered that all the other Qur'anic materials, whether written in fragmentary manuscripts or whole copies, be burnt.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Allah's commands with excellence , Strive for perfection , Unite among Muslims worldwide

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Uthman was concerned about people from different regions reciting the Quran differently, so he asked Hafsa for all the manuscripts of the Quran so that he could compile perfect copies. He then assigned four people; Zaid Bin Thabit, Abdullah Bin AzZubair, Sa’id Bin Al-As and AbdurRahman Bin Harith Bin Hisham to rewrite these manuscripts into perfect copies. After this was done, Uthman sent one copy each to every Muslim province and ordered all other Quranic materials be destroyed. This hadith teaches us that it is important for Muslims around the world to recite from one source in order for there not be any discrepancies or confusion when it comes to understanding Allah's words in The Holy Book. It also teaches us that we should strive for perfection when it comes our religious practices as well as our daily lives since Allah has commanded us with excellence in everything we do.
