Sahih al-Bukhari 4931b (Book 65, Hadith 452) #4712
Escaping Evil

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was in a cave with his companions when a snake appeared. He told them to kill it, but they were unable to do so. The Prophet then said that the snake had escaped their evil, as they had escaped its.

Narrated 'Abdullah: While we were with Allah's Messenger in a cave, Surat "Wal Mursalat" was revealed to him and we received it directly from his mouth as soon as he had received the revelation. Suddenly a snake came out and Allah's Messenger said, "Get at it and kill it!" We ran to kill it but it outstripped us. Allah's Apostle said, "It has escaped your evil, as you too, have escaped its".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be aware of your surroundings; Take precautions against potential harm or danger; Respect all creatures of Allah regardless of size or perceived threat level .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's experience in a cave with his companions. While there, he received revelation from Allah and suddenly a snake appeared. He instructed his companions to kill it, but they were unable to do so and the snake escaped their evil. The Prophet then said that just as the snake had escaped their evil, they too had escaped its evil intentions towards them. This teaches us that we should always be aware of our surroundings and take precautions against any potential harm or danger that may come our way; however, if something does happen despite our best efforts we should not despair because Allah will protect us from any harm or danger if it is His will for us to be safe and secure.
