Moving the Tongue During Revelation

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to move his tongue when the divine Inspiration was being revealed to him in order to memorize it, and Allah revealed a verse in response.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet used to move his tongue when the divine Inspiration was being revealed to him. (Sufyan, a subnarrator, demonstrated (how the Prophet used to move his lips) and added".In order to memorize it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take our time when learning or reciting Quran; Strive for excellence in whatever we do; Reflect on its teachings.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn 'Abbas tells us that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received revelation from Allah, he would move his tongue as a way of memorizing it. In response to this action of the Prophet ﷺ, Allah revealed a verse in Surah Al-Qiyamah which states “Move not your tongue concerning (the Qur'an) to make haste therewith” (75:16). This hadith teaches us that we should take our time and be patient when learning or reciting Quran. We should not rush through it but rather take our time and focus on understanding its meaning and reflecting on its teachings. It also teaches us that we should strive for excellence in whatever we do; even something as simple as reciting Quran requires effort and dedication if one wishes to truly benefit from it.
