Sahih al-Bukhari 4714 (Book 65, Hadith 236) #4497
Worshipping Allah Alone

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the verse from the Quran which states that those who are worshipped by people, such as Jesus and angels, also worship Allah and seek His mercy. It further explains that some Jinns accepted Islam while humans stuck to their old religion.

Narrated 'Abdullah: Regarding the explanation of the Verse: 'Those whom they call upon (worship) (like Jesus the Son of Mary, angels etc) desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord (Allah) as to which of them should be the nearer and they hope for His Mercy and fear His torment'. (17:57) They themselves (eg Angels, saints, Apostles, Jesus, etc.,) worshipped Allah, Those Jinns who were worshipped by some Arabs became Muslims (embraced Islam), but those human beings stuck to their (old) religion. Al- A'mash said extra: 'Say, (O Muhammad): Call unto those besides Him whom you assume (to be gods)'. (17:56)

QUICK LESSONS:
Worship only one God -Allah-.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about worshipping only one God, Allah. It explains a verse from the Quran which states that even those who are worshipped by people, such as Jesus and angels, also worship Allah and seek His mercy. The hadith further explains that some of the jinns accepted Islam while humans stuck to their old religion. This teaches us an important lesson; we should only worship one God -Allah- and not anyone else or any other thing in this world. We should always strive to be closer to Him through our prayers and good deeds so we can receive His mercy on the Day of Judgment.
