Sahih al-Bukhari 4675 (Book 65, Hadith 197) #4458
Invoking Forgiveness for Non-Believers

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) asked Abu Talib to say the shahada before he passed away, but was forbidden from asking for forgiveness for him due to his pagan beliefs.

Narrated Al-Musaiyab: When Abu Talib's death approached, the Prophet went to him while Abu Jahl and 'Abdullah bin Abi Umaiya were present with him. The Prophet said, "O uncle, say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, so that I may argue for your case with it before Allah". On that, Abu Jahl and 'Abdullah bin Abu Umaiya said, "O Abu Talib! Do you want to renounce 'Abdul Muttalib's religion?" Then the Prophet said, "I will keep on asking (Allah for) forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden to do so". Then there was revealed:-- 'It is not fitting for the Prophet and those who believe that they should invoke (Allah) for forgiveness for pagans even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the Fire'. (9:113)

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's attempt to help his uncle, Abu Talib, accept Islam before he passed away. When Abu Jahl and 'Abdullah bin Abi Umaiya were present with him, the Prophet asked him to say "None has the right to be worshipped except Allah" so that he could argue on his behalf in front of Allah. However, they tried to dissuade him by asking if he wanted to renounce 'Abdul Muttalib's religion. Despite this, the Prophet kept on asking forgiveness for Abu Talib until a verse was revealed forbidding it as it was clear that Abu Talib was a non-believer and companion of Hellfire. This hadith teaches us that we should not ask forgiveness for those who are non-believers even if they are our relatives or close friends as it is not fitting according to Islamic teachings.
