Sahih al-Bukhari 4670 (Book 65, Hadith 192) #4453
Offering Funeral Prayers for Hypocrites

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was asked to offer the funeral prayer for 'Abdullah bin 'Ubai, but 'Umar objected as he was a hypocrite. Allah then revealed a verse forbidding the Prophet (ﷺ) from offering such prayers.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: When 'Abdullah bin 'Ubai died, his son 'Abdullah bin 'Abdullah came to Allah's Messenger and asked him to give him his shirt in order to shroud his father in it. He gave it to him and then 'Abdullah asked the Prophet to offer the funeral prayer for him (his father). Allah's Messenger got up to offer the funeral prayer for him, but 'Umar got up too and got hold of the garment of Allah's Messenger and said, "O Allah's Messenger Will you offer the funeral prayer for him though your Lord has forbidden you to offer the prayer for him" Allah's Messenger said, "But Allah has given me the choice by saying: '(Whether you) ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them; even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times'. (9:80) so I will ask more than seventy times"'.Umar said, "But he ('Abdullah bin 'Ubai) is a hypocrite!" However, Allah's Messenger did offer the funeral prayer for him whereupon Allah revealed: 'And never (O Muhammad) pray for anyone of them that dies, nor stand at his grave'. (9:84)

QUICK LESSONS:
Make your own choices within limits set by God; forgive those who have wronged you; do not judge others without knowing their intentions; pray for those who have passed away even if they were hypocrites or sinners; ask forgiveness from God more than seventy times if needed .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the incident when Abdullah bin Ubai died and his son Abdullah bin Abdullah came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asking him to offer funeral prayer for his father. Umar objected as he was a hypocrite, however, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offered the prayer anyway and Allah revealed a verse forbidding him from offering such prayers in future. This hadith teaches us that we should not be judgemental of others and should always forgive them even if they are hypocrites or sinners. We should also remember that it is only Allah who knows what lies in people’s hearts and He alone can judge them accordingly on the Day of Judgement. Furthermore, this hadith also reminds us that we have been given free will by Allah so we can make our own choices in life but at the same time we must remember that whatever choice we make must be within limits set by Him.
