Sahih al-Bukhari 4668 (Book 65, Hadith 190) #4451
Charity is Not Measured by Quantity

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that Allah does not judge people based on the amount of charity they give, but rather on their intentions and sincerity.

Narrated Abu Mas'ud: When we were ordered to give alms, we began to work as porters (to earn something we could give in charity). Abu 'Aqil came with one half of a Sa' (special measure for food grains) and another person brought more than he did. So the hypocrites said, "Allah is not in need of the alms of this (ie Abu 'Aqil); and this other person did not give alms but for showing off". Then Allah revealed:-- 'Those who criticize such of the Believers who give charity voluntarily and those who could not find to give in charity except what is available to them'. (9:79)

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity with good intention and without expecting anything in return .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of giving charity and how it should be done with sincerity and good intention. It is narrated by Abu Mas'ud that when they were ordered to give alms, they began to work as porters in order to earn something for charity. However, when one person gave less than another person, the hypocrites criticized him saying that Allah was not in need of his alms. In response to this criticism, Allah revealed a verse from the Quran which states that those who criticize such believers who give charity voluntarily or those who could not find much to give in charity will be punished. This hadith teaches us an important lesson about giving charity; it should be done with sincerity and without any expectations of reward or recognition from others. We should also remember that Allah does not judge us based on how much we can afford to give but rather on our intentions behind it.
