The Day of 'Arafat and the Perfection of Religion

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Jews asking Umar about a verse of the Quran and Umar's response to them.

Narrated Tariq bin Shihab: The Jews said to 'Umar, "You (ie Muslims) recite a Verse, and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken the day of its revelation as a day of celebration"'.Umar said, "I know very well when and where it was revealed, and where Allah's Messenger was when it was revealed. (It was revealed on) the day of 'Arafat (Hajj Day), and by Allah, I was at 'Arafat" Sufyan, a sub-narrator said: I am in doubt whether the Verse:-- "This day I have perfected your religion for you". was revealed on a Friday or not.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ، قَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ لِعُمَرَ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ آيَةً لَوْ نَزَلَتْ فِينَا لاَتَّخَذْنَاهَا عِيدًا‏.‏ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ إِنِّي لأَعْلَمُ حَيْثُ أُنْزِلَتْ، وَأَيْنَ أُنْزِلَتْ، وَأَيْنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حِينَ أُنْزِلَتْ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ، وَإِنَّا وَاللَّهِ بِعَرَفَةَ ـ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ وَأَشُكُّ كَانَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَمْ لاَ – ‏{‏الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ‏}‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a conversation between Umar and some Jews. The Jews asked Umar why Muslims celebrate a certain day, to which he replied that he knew when and where it was revealed. He then went on to explain that it was revealed on the day of Arafat during Hajj, and that he himself was present at Arafat when it happened. He also mentioned that there is some doubt as to whether or not another verse in the Quran was revealed on a Friday or not. This hadith teaches us that we should be aware of our religious history so we can better understand our faith. It also shows us how important it is for us to be knowledgeable in order for us to answer questions people may have about Islam. Furthermore, this hadith highlights how important Hajj is in Islam as many revelations were made during this time period.
