Sahih al-Bukhari 4579 (Book 65, Hadith 101) #4362
The Forbidden Inheritance of Women

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the verse from the Quran which states that it is forbidden to inherit women against their will and to treat them harshly.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: regarding the Divine Verse: "O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will, and you should not treat them with harshness that you may take back part of the (Mahr) dower you have given them". (4:19) (Before this revelation) if a man died, his relatives used to have the right to inherit his wife, and one of them could marry her if he would, or they would give her in marriage if they wished, or, if they wished, they would not give her in marriage at all, and they would be more entitled to dispose her, than her own relatives. So the above Verse was revealed in this connection.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains a verse from the Quran which states that it is forbidden for men to inherit women against their will and to treat them harshly. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas, who was a companion of Prophet Muhammad. Before this revelation, if a man died, his relatives would have the right to inherit his wife and could either marry her or give her in marriage if they wished. However, with this revelation, it became clear that women should not be treated as property but rather should be given respect and autonomy over their own lives. This verse emphasizes the importance of treating women with kindness and respect in all aspects of life.
