Sahih al-Bukhari 4512 (Book 65, Hadith 39) #4300
The Meaning of Righteousness

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that it is not righteous to enter houses from the back, but rather righteousness is achieved by fearing Allah, obeying His orders and staying away from what He has forbidden.

Narrated Al-Bara: In the Pre-lslamic Period when the people assumed Ihram, they would enter their houses from the back. So Allah revealed:-- "And it is not righteousness that you enter houses from the back, but the righteous man is he who fears Allah, obeys His Orders and keeps away from what He has forbidden. So enter houses through their doors". (2:189)

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the meaning of righteousness according to Islam. It teaches us that true righteousness does not come from entering a house through its back door, but rather it comes from fearing Allah and obeying His orders while avoiding what He has forbidden. Fearing Allah means having respect for Him and understanding that He knows all our actions and will judge us accordingly. Obeying His orders means following the teachings of Islam such as praying five times a day, fasting during Ramadan, giving charity etc., while avoiding what He has forbidden includes refraining from things like lying, stealing or drinking alcohol. By doing these things we can become righteous people in the eyes of Allah.
