Sahih al-Bukhari 4459 (Book 64, Hadith 475) #4248
Did Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Appoint Ali as His Successor?

SUMMARY: Aisha, the wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), questions how people can say that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) appointed Ali as his successor when she was with him when he passed away and did not feel it.

Narrated Al-Aswad: It was mentioned in the presence of 'Aisha that the Prophet had appointed 'Ali as successor by will. Thereupon she said, "Who said so? I saw the Prophet, while I was supporting him against my chest. He asked for a tray, and then fell on one side and expired, and I did not feel it. So how (do the people say) he appointed 'Ali as his successor?"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the succession of leadership after the death of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is narrated by Al-Aswad that it was mentioned in the presence of 'Aisha, one of the wives of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, that he had appointed 'Ali as his successor by will. To this, she replied saying that she was with him when he passed away and did not feel anything like an appointment being made. This shows us how important it is to be sure about what we are saying before making any claims or statements. We should always make sure to double check our facts before speaking out loud so we don't spread false information or hurt anyone's feelings in the process. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us to be respectful towards others and their opinions even if they differ from ours because everyone has a right to their own opinion and beliefs.
