Sahih al-Bukhari 4376, 4377 (Book 64, Hadith 401) #4174
Worshiping Stones and Running to Musailima al-Kadhdhab

SUMMARY: People used to worship stones and perform rituals in the month of Rajab, but when the Prophet (ﷺ) sent with Allah's message, they ran to Musailima al-Kadhdhab.

Narrated Abu Raja Al-Utaridi: We used to worship stones, and when we found a better stone than the first one, we would throw the first one and take the latter, but if we could not get a stone then we would collect some earth (ie soil) and then bring a sheep and milk that sheep over it, and perform the Tawaf around it. When the month of Rajab came, we used (to stop the military actions), calling this month the iron remover, for we used to remove and throw away the iron parts of every spear and arrow in the month of Rajab. Abu Raja' added: When the Prophet sent with (Allah's) Message, I was a boy working as a shepherd of my family camels. When we heard the news about the appearance of the Prophet, we ran to the fire, ie to Musailima al-Kadhdhab.

QUICK LESSONS:
Devote oneself only to God SWT; Be kind & compassionate; Abstain from violence & aggression against others .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how people used to worship stones before the arrival of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They would collect earth and bring a sheep which they would milk over it, then perform Tawaf around it. In addition, during the month of Rajab they would stop military actions and throw away any iron parts from their spears or arrows. When news spread about the appearance of the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Raja' who was a young boy at that time tending his family camels ran towards Musailima al-Kadhdhab instead. This hadith teaches us that we should not be worshipping anything other than Allah SWT as He is our only Creator who deserves all our love and devotion. We should also strive to follow His teachings by being kind and compassionate towards others as well as abstaining from any form of violence or aggression against them.
