Sahih al-Bukhari 4325 (Book 64, Hadith 355) #4128
Perseverance in Difficult Times

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions were discouraged after failing to conquer Taif, but the Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged them to fight again and they eventually succeeded.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: When Allah's Messenger besieged Taif and could not conquer its people, he said, "We will return (to Medina) If Allah wills". That distressed the Companions (of the Prophet and they said, "Shall we go away without conquering it (ie the Fort of Taif)?" Once the Prophet said, "Let us return". Then the Prophet said (to them), "Fight tomorrow". They fought and (many of them) got wounded, whereupon the Prophet said, "We will return (to Medina) tomorrow if Allah wills". That delighted them, whereupon the Prophet smiled. The sub-narrator, Sufyan said once, "(The Prophet) smiled".

QUICK LESSONS:
Persevere even during difficult times; Encourage others; Have faith in Allah's willingness; Keep trying until success is achieved

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the perseverance of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions during difficult times. When they were unable to conquer Taif, they wanted to give up, but the Prophet ﷺ encouraged them not to give up and keep trying. He told them that if Allah wills, they will return tomorrow and fight again. His encouragement made them happy and he smiled at their enthusiasm. They fought again with renewed vigor and eventually succeeded in conquering Taif. This hadith teaches us that we should never give up even when faced with difficult situations because Allah can help us succeed if we persevere through it all. We should also encourage others when they are feeling down or discouraged so that their spirits can be lifted as well.
