Rules of Shortened Prayers During Travel

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the rules of offering shortened prayers when travelling for a certain period of time.

Narrated 'Ikrima: Ibn 'Abbas said, "We stayed for 19 days with Prophet on a journey during which we used to offer shortened prayers". Ibn 'Abbas added, "We offer the Qasr prayer (ie shortened prayer) If we stay up to 19 days as travelers, But if we stay longer, we offer complete prayers.
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ أَقَمْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ فِي سَفَرٍ تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ نَقْصُرُ الصَّلاَةَ‏.‏ وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَنَحْنُ نَقْصُرُ مَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ، فَإِذَا زِدْنَا أَتْمَمْنَا‏.‏

This hadith explains the rules regarding offering shortened prayers while travelling. According to this hadith, if one is travelling for 19 days or less then they should offer Qasr prayer which is a shortened version of the regular prayer. However, if one is travelling for more than 19 days then they should offer complete prayers. This hadith teaches us that we must be mindful and follow Islamic laws even when we are away from home on a journey. It also reminds us to stay connected with our faith no matter where we are in the world and not let our travels take us away from our religious obligations.
