Sahih al-Bukhari 4279 (Book 64, Hadith 313) #4087
Fasting During Travel in Ramadan

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) travelling during Ramadan and sometimes fasting and sometimes not fasting while travelling.

Narrated Tawus: Ibn 'Abbas said, "Allah's Messenger travelled in the month of Ramadan and he fasted till he reached (a place called) Usfan, then he asked for a tumbler of water and drank it by the daytime so that the people might see him. He broke his fast till he reached Mecca". Ibn 'Abbas used to say, "Allah's Apostle fasted and sometimes did not fast while traveling, so one may fast or may not (on journeys)"

QUICK LESSONS:
Be considerate towards others when making decisions about your own religious practices; understand circumstances around one's actions before taking action; make up for any missed days after travel ends .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the Prophet Muhammad's journey during the month of Ramadan. He fasted until he reached a place called Usfan and then drank water in front of people so that they could see him. Ibn Abbas said that it was permissible to fast or not to fast while travelling during this time. This teaches us that it is okay to break our fasts if we are travelling as long as we make up for them later on. It also shows us how important it is to be considerate of others when making decisions about our own religious practices; by drinking water in front of people, the Prophet was showing them that it was okay for them to do so too if they were travelling during this time.
