Appointing a Commander in Battle

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) appointing Zaid bin Haritha as the commander of an army and giving instructions for who should take over if he were to be martyred.

'Abdullah bin 'Umar said: "Allah's Messenger appointed Zaid bin Haritha as the commander of the army during the Ghazwa of Mu'tah and said, "If Zaid is martyred, Ja'far should take over his position, and if Ja'far is martyred, 'Abdullah bin Rawaha should take over his position'. " 'Abdulla-h bin 'Umar further said, "I was present amongst them in that battle and we searched for Ja'far bin Abi Talib and found his body amongst the bodies of the martyred ones, and found over ninety wounds over his body, caused by stabs or shots (of arrows).
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُغِيرَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ أَمَّرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فِي غَزْوَةِ مُوتَةَ زَيْدَ بْنَ حَارِثَةَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ إِنْ قُتِلَ زَيْدٌ فَجَعْفَرٌ، وَإِنْ قُتِلَ جَعْفَرٌ فَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ كُنْتُ فِيهِمْ فِي تِلْكَ الْغَزْوَةِ فَالْتَمَسْنَا جَعْفَرَ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، فَوَجَدْنَاهُ فِي الْقَتْلَى، وَوَجَدْنَا مَا فِي جَسَدِهِ بِضْعًا وَتِسْعِينَ مِنْ طَعْنَةٍ وَرَمْيَةٍ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's appointment of Zaid bin Haritha as commander of an army during a battle known as Ghazwa Mu'tah. The Prophet also gave instructions that if Zaid were to be martyred then Ja'far should take over his position and if Ja'far was martyred then 'Abdullah bin Rawaha should take over his position. Abdullah bin Umar was present at this battle and reported that they found Ja'far's body amongst those who had been martyred with ninety wounds from stabs or arrows on it. This hadith teaches us about the importance of appointing a leader in times of war and having someone ready to step up in case something happens to them. It also shows us how bravely these companions fought for their faith even when faced with certain death.
