Eating Horse Meat is Allowed, Eating Donkey Meat is Forbidden

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade the eating of donkey meat and allowed the eating of horse meat.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: On the day of Khaibar, Allah's Messenger forbade the eating of donkey meat and allowed the eating of horse meat.
حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ عَنْ لُحُومِ الْحُمُرِ، وَرَخَّصَ فِي الْخَيْلِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
On the day of Khaibar, which was a battle between Muslims and Jews in Arabia during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Allah's Messenger ﷺ forbade the eating of donkey meat and allowed the eating of horse meat. This hadith teaches us that we should follow what Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has said as it is from Allah SWT. We should not eat donkey meat but we can eat horsemeat if it is slaughtered according to Islamic rules. This hadith also teaches us that we should be obedient to our leaders and follow their instructions as they are from Allah SWT. We must also remember that all food must be halal or permissible according to Islamic law before consuming it.
