Allah's Agreement with Umar bin Al-Khattab

SUMMARY: This hadith talks about the three things that Allah agreed with Umar bin Al-Khattab on, which are taking the station of Abraham as a place of prayer, veiling of women and giving Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) better wives than his current ones.

Narrated 'Umar (bin Al-Khattab): My Lord agreed with me in three things: I said, "O Allah's Messenger ﷺ, I wish we took the station of Abraham as our praying place (for some of our prayers). So came the Divine Inspiration: And take you (people) the station of Abraham as a place of prayer (for some of your prayers eg:two rak'at of Tawaf of Ka'ba)". (Qur'an 2:125) . And as regards the (verse of) the veiling of the women, I said, 'O Allah's Messenger ﷺ! I wish you ordered your wives to cover themselves from the men because good and bad ones talk to them'. So the verse of the veiling of the women was revealed. Once the wives of the Prophet ﷺ made a united front against the Prophet ﷺ and I said to them, 'It may be if he (the Prophet) divorced you, (all) that his Lord (Allah) will give him instead of you wives better than you'. So this verse (the same as I had said) was revealed". (66:5).
حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ قَالَ عُمَرُ وَافَقْتُ رَبِّي فِي ثَلاَثٍ، فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اتَّخَذْنَا مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى فَنَزَلَتْ ‏{‏وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى‏}‏ وَآيَةُ الْحِجَابِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، لَوْ أَمَرْتَ نِسَاءَكَ أَنْ يَحْتَجِبْنَ، فَإِنَّهُ يُكَلِّمُهُنَّ الْبَرُّ وَالْفَاجِرُ‏.‏ فَنَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الْحِجَابِ، وَاجْتَمَعَ نِسَاءُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي الْغَيْرَةِ عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُنَّ عَسَى رَبُّهُ إِنْ طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَنْ يُبَدِّلَهُ أَزْوَاجًا خَيْرًا مِنْكُنَّ‏.‏ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about three things that Allah agreed to with Umar bin Al-Khattab. The first was taking the station of Abraham as a place for prayer. This was revealed in Qur'an 2:125 which states "And take you (people) the station of Abraham as a place of prayer". The second thing was regarding veiling women, where Umar suggested that Prophet Muhammad's wives should cover themselves from men so they would not be exposed to good and bad people alike. This suggestion was also accepted by Allah and revealed in Qur'an 66:5 . Lastly, when Prophet Muhammad's wives united against him, Umar suggested that if he divorced them then Allah would give him better wives than them. Again this suggestion was accepted by Allah and revealed in Qur'an 66:5 . From this hadith we learn that it is important to make supplications to God for our needs and wishes because He may accept them just like He did with Umar bin Al-Khattab's requests. We also learn from this hadith how important it is for us to protect ourselves from bad influences by covering ourselves properly or avoiding certain places or people altogether if necessary. Lastly we learn how important it is for us to have faith in God even during difficult times because He will always provide us with something better than what we have now if we trust Him enough.
