Sahih al-Bukhari 4135 (Book 64, Hadith 179) #3954
Forgiveness in the Face of Adversity

SUMMARY: A Bedouin took the Prophet's sword while he was asleep, but the Prophet chose to forgive him instead of punishing him.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: That he fought in a Ghazwa towards Najd along with Allah's Messenger and when Allah's Messenger returned, he too, returned along with him. The time of the afternoon nap overtook them when they were in a valley full of thorny trees. Allah's Messenger dismounted and the people dispersed amongst the thorny trees, seeking the shade of the trees. Allah's Messenger took shelter under a Samura tree and hung his sword on it. We slept for a while when Allah's Messenger suddenly called us, and we went to him, to find a bedouin sitting with him. Allah's Messenger said, "This (bedouin) took my sword out of its sheath while I was asleep. When I woke up, the naked sword was in his hand and he said to me, 'Who can save you from me?, I replied, 'Allah'. Now here he is sitting". Allah's Messenger did not punish him (for that).

QUICK LESSONS:
Choose forgiveness over punishment even if you are faced with adversity or someone wrongs you

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how even in a difficult situation, one should choose forgiveness over punishment. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was travelling with his companions when they stopped for a nap in a valley full of thorny trees. While they were sleeping, a bedouin came and took the Prophet's sword from its sheath. When he woke up and saw this, he asked who could save him from this man. He replied that Allah could save him and then asked the bedouin why he had taken his sword. Instead of punishing or scolding him, the Prophet forgave him and let him go without any repercussions for his actions. This teaches us that even when we are faced with adversity or someone wrongs us, we should still choose to forgive them instead of seeking revenge or punishment as it is more beneficial for both parties involved in the long run.
