Sahih al-Bukhari 399 (Book 8, Hadith 50) #394
Changing of Qibla from Baitul-Maqdis to Ka'ba

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) changed his qibla from Baitul-Maqdis to the Ka'ba in Mecca, and how Allah revealed a verse in response to this change.

Narrated Bara' bin 'Azib: Allah's Messenger prayed facing Baitul-Maqdis for sixteen or seventeen months but he loved to face the Ka'ba (at Mecca) so Allah revealed: "Verily, We have seen the turning of your face to the heaven!" (2:144) So the Prophet faced the Ka'ba and the fools amongst the people namely "the Jews" said, "What has turned them from their Qibla (Baitul-Maqdis) which they formerly observed"" (Allah revealed): "Say: 'To Allah belongs the East and the West. He guides whom he will to a straight path'". (2:142) A man prayed with the Prophet (facing the Ka'ba) and went out. He saw some of the Ansar praying the 'Asr prayer with their faces towards Baitul-Maqdis, he said, "I bear witness that I prayed with Allah's Messenger facing the Ka'ba". So all the people turned their faces towards the Ka'ba.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow what our beloved prophet did without questioning it .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's change of qiblas, or direction of prayer, from Baitul-Maqdis to the Ka'ba in Mecca. The Jews were confused by this change and asked why it was made. In response, Allah revealed a verse that said that He guides whom He wills on a straight path and that East and West belong to Him. After praying with the Prophet facing towards the Ka'ba, one man went out and saw some of the Ansar praying with their faces towards Baitul-Maqdis. He then told them he prayed with Allah's Messenger facing towards the Ka’bah so they all turned their faces towards it as well. This hadith teaches us that we should always follow what our beloved Prophet did without questioning it because Allah will guide us on His straight path if we do so.
