Staying Away from Doubtful Things

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that it is important to stay away from doubtful things as they can lead to unlawful acts. It also emphasizes the importance of the heart, as it is the most important part of the body.

An-Nu'man bin Bashir (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah said, "What is lawful is clear and what is unlawful is clear, but between them are certain doubtful things which many people do not know. So he who guards against doubtful things keeps his religion and his honour blameless. But he who falls into doubtful things falls into that which is unlawful, just as a shepherd who grazes his cattle in the vicinity of a pasture declared prohibited (by the king); he is likely to stray into the pasture. Mind you, every king has a protected pasture and Allah's involved limits is that which He has declared unlawful. Verily, there is a piece of flesh in the body, if it is healthy, the whole body is healthy, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Verily, it is the heart". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Stay away from doubtful things in order to keep your religion and honor blameless

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that it is important for us to stay away from doubtful things in order to keep our religion and honor blameless. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ compares this concept to a shepherd who grazes his cattle near a pasture declared prohibited by a king; he may accidentally stray into the pasture if he isn't careful. Allah has set limits on what we should and shouldn't do and these limits are clear; however, there are certain things which many people don't know about which fall into a grey area between lawful and unlawful. The Prophet ﷺ also emphasizes the importance of having a healthy heart as it affects our entire body - if our hearts are healthy then we will be healthy too. We should strive to keep our hearts pure by avoiding doubtful matters so that we can remain true believers in Allah's eyes.
