Greeting Inhabitants of the Graveyard

SUMMARY: This hadith teaches us to greet the inhabitants of the graveyard with peace and to pray for their well-being.

Buraidah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet used to teach them (ie, the Companions) whenever they came out to visit the graveyard to say: "As-salamu 'alaikum ahlad-diyyari minal- Mu'minina wal-Muslimina, wa inna in sha' Allahu bikum lahiqun. As 'alul-laha lana wa-lakumul- 'afiyyah (May you be safe, O inmates of the abodes of the believers and the Muslims, and if Allah pleases, we shall follow you, we pray to Allah for well-being for ourselves and for you)". Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Greet people in graveyards with respect and kindness; Pray for their wellbeing; Remember them in prayer so they may receive Allah's mercy in the afterlife

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Buraidah ibn Al-Haseeb and it teaches us a lesson about how we should greet those who have passed away. We should say “As salamu alaikum ahlad diyyari minal mu’minina wal muslimina” which translates to “Peace be upon you O inhabitants of the abodes of believers and Muslims”. We should also pray for their well being by saying “As alul laha lana wa lakumul afiyyah” which translates to “We pray to Allah for our own well being as well as yours”. This hadith reminds us that even though someone has passed away they are still part of our community and we should treat them with respect and kindness. It also encourages us to always remember those who have gone before us in prayer so that they may receive Allah's mercy in the afterlife.
