The Responsibility of Writing a Will

SUMMARY: It is the responsibility of a Muslim to have a written will if they have something to bequeath.

'Abdullah bin 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah said, "It is the duty of a Muslim who has something which is to be given as a bequest not to have it for two nights without executing a written will". Al-Bukhari and Muslim. In the narration of Muslim it is narrated as 'three nights'. Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: Since I heard the Messenger of Allah say this, I have never spent a night without having my will with me.
وعنه أن رسول الله قال‏:‏ “ ما حق امرئ مسلم ، له شئ يوصي فيه ، يبيت ليلتين إلا ووصيته مكتوبة عنده” ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏ هذا لفظ البخاري‏.‏ وفى رواية لمسلم” يبيت ثلاث ليال‏:‏ قال ابن عمر‏:‏ ما مرت على ليلة منذ سمعت رسول الله قال ذلك إلا وعندي وصيتي‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of having a written will when one has something to bequeath. It is narrated that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that it is the duty of every Muslim who has something which needs to be given as a bequest not to spend two nights without executing a written will. Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said that since he heard this from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he never spent another night without having his will with him. This hadith teaches us about the importance of being prepared for death and making sure our affairs are in order before we pass away. It also encourages us to think ahead and plan for our future by writing down our wishes so they can be fulfilled after we are gone.
