The People of As-Suffah and Their Poverty

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the people of As-Suffah, who were poor and did not have cloaks to cover themselves. They had to make do with lower cloths or blankets which they suspended from their necks.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I saw seventy of the people of As-Suffah and none of them had a cloak. They had either a lower cloth or a blanket which they suspended from their necks. Some reached half way down to the legs and some to the ankles, and one of them would manage to keep it in his hand to avoid exposing his private parts. Al-Bukhari.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for modesty even when facing difficult situations such as poverty or lack of resources.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the people of As-Suffah who were very poor and did not have enough money to buy proper clothing. Instead, they used lower cloths or blankets which they hung around their necks in order to cover themselves. Despite their poverty, these people still managed to maintain modesty by making sure that their private parts were covered at all times. This hadith teaches us that even when we are in difficult situations such as poverty or lack of resources, we should still strive for modesty and decency in our behavior and actions.
