Poverty and Salvation

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) observed that most of those who enter Jannah are poor, while the rich are held back and those destined for Hell are sent there immediately.

Usamah bin Zaid (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet said, "I stood at the gate of Jannah and saw that most of those who enter it were poor, whereas the rich were held back; but those who were destined to go to Hell were ordered to be sent there (immediately)". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about poverty and salvation. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ observed that most of those who enter Jannah, or Heaven, were poor people while the rich were held back from entering. On the other hand, those destined to go to Hell were ordered to be sent there immediately. This hadith teaches us that wealth does not guarantee salvation in the afterlife; rather it is piety and righteousness which will lead one to Paradise. It also shows us how important it is for us to help the less fortunate in our society as they may have a better chance at being saved than we do. Furthermore, this hadith reminds us of our mortality and encourages us to strive for righteousness so that we can attain eternal bliss in Paradise after death.
