The Lasting Legacy of Deeds

SUMMARY: The deeds of a person will remain with them even after death, while their family and wealth will not.

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah said: "Three (things) follow a dead person: Members of his family, his property and his deeds. Two of them return; and one remains with him. The people and his wealth return; his deeds remain with him". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Do good works throughout one's life.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith by Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) explains that when a person dies, they leave behind three things - their family members, their wealth and possessions, and their deeds. Of these three things only the deeds remain with the deceased; the people and possessions return to those who were connected to them in life. This hadith teaches us that our actions are what truly matter in life as they are what we take with us when we die. We should strive to do good deeds throughout our lives so that we can leave behind a legacy of good works for others to remember us by.
