Reciting the Qur'an Moves the Heart

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) asked Ibn Mas'ud to recite the Qur'an to him, and when he did, the Prophet (ﷺ) was moved to tears.

Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet said to me: "Recite the Qur'an to me". I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Shall I recite the Qur'an to you, when it has been revealed to you?" He replied, "I love to hear it recited by others". So I recited to him a portion from Surat An-Nisa'. When I reached the Ayah: "How (will it be) then, when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad ) as a witness against these people?". (4:41) He said, "Enough for now". When I looked at him I saw his eyes were shedding tears. Al- Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect others, be sincere in worshiping Allah through reciting His words from Qur’an.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how reciting the Quran can move people emotionally. It is narrated by Ibn Mas’ud who reported that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked him to recite a portion of Surat An-Nisa'. When he reached a certain ayat, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said “enough for now” and his eyes were filled with tears. This hadith shows us that even though Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was already familiar with the words of Allah in Quran, hearing it from someone else still moved him deeply. It also teaches us that we should not take our recitation of Quran lightly as it has great power and beauty which can move hearts if done sincerely. We should strive to make our recitations meaningful and heartfelt so that we too can experience this emotion when reading or listening to it.
